Makhtesh Ramon and Mount Saharonim

Service Description

The hike begins in Nahal Ardon, east of Makhtesh Ramon, a geological formation created not by an impact or an eruption, but by the erosion of an ancient rock dome. The trail, part of the Shvil Israel, follows the dry bed of the Ardon River. Upon reaching Nahal Nekarot with its white, friable limestone, you walk along an ancient Nabatean road, once used by spice trade caravans traveling from Petra to the Mediterranean. The ascent to Mount Saharonim offers a striking panorama of the makhtesh’s structure and its ever-changing colors. Along the way, it is common to spot wild desert donkeys (onagers) and "zanban," a small bird of the Negev well adapted to arid environments. The route ends at the Nahal Gvanim campsite, a peaceful spot to spend the night under the starry Negev sky. Le sentier, intégré au Shvil Israel, suit le lit sec de la rivière Ardon. En rejoignant le Nahal Nekarot et sa roche blanche calcaire et friable, on marche sur une ancienne route nabatéenne, autrefois empruntée par les caravanes du commerce des épices reliant Pétra à la Méditerranée. La montée vers le Mont Saharonim offre un panorama saisissant sur la structure du makhtesh et ses couleurs changeantes. En chemin, il est fréquent d’apercevoir des ânes sauvages du désert (onagre) et des "zanban", petit oiseau du Néguev bien adapté aux milieux arides. Le parcours s’achève au campement de Nahal Gvanim, endroit paisible pour passer la nuit sous le ciel étoilé du Néguev.
