Nahal Mishmar

6 hrNahal Mishmar

Service Description

The Nahal Mishmar hike, in the heart of the Judean Desert, is one of the most spectacular in Israel. Rated as difficult, it covers 12 km with 500 meters of elevation gain through a deep canyon lined with imposing cliffs. Warning: entering the canyon bed during rainy weather is strictly forbidden due to the risk of sudden flash floods, which can be extremely violent in the desert. Along the way, hikers discover a surprising oasis of vegetation, including the Egyptian Caper, as well as hyraxes, Black Wheatears, and various birds of prey such as the Golden Eagle. The cliffs, true natural sanctuaries, serve as nesting sites throughout the route. The trail crosses the canyon bed, where numerous natural pools (גב מים) appear after rainfall. Ladders help hikers climb the rock walls in an uncanny desert silence. The walk alternates between shaded sections and open plateaus offering majestic views of the Dead Sea and the mountains of Moab. Toward the end of the route, one reaches the Mishmar Spring (עין משמר): water seeps from the rock, and abundant vegetation sustains desert foxes, gazelles, and wild goats. From the heights above the spring, one can spot the Treasure Cave, which in 1961 revealed an extraordinary collection of copper artifacts (dating back roughly 6,000 years), likely hidden during a pagan ritual carried out in this harsh desert environment. Accessible to hikers in good physical condition, this trail combines raw nature, fascinating geology, and a biblical atmosphere. An authentic immersion into the magic of the desert.
